Biography
The Duchess Jessica was born to the Daughtner branch of House Antilles on Alderaan, to all the riches and glory that title could afford one. However, the middle child, and a daughter, Jessica was raised as the disposable diplomatic bargaining chip, meant for marriage and little else, neither an heir nor a spare.
To say she was raised by her parents, too, would be an exaggeration, largely raised by her tutors and a Twi’lek wet nurse, seeing her parents only on occasions of note, or if she had done something wrong. All this raised an entitled headstrong young woman, who nevertheless always maintained a strong sense of noblesse oblige—her duty to her people to use her wealth and power for good.
From an early age Jessica displayed an aptitude for the force, but eager not to lose his bargaining chip, her father the Duke Daughtner called in favours from a Jedi friend to train the girl in the ways of the force without having to take her away for a life in the order. This, unideal education only furthered the girl’s problems with discipline.
Still, at sixteen she was married off to a distant cousin in another house as a diplomatic offering, only for the sickly boy to die shortly after the wedding. Now a teenaged widow, Jessica found herself useless in the sight of her only purpose. No nobleman would marry goods damaged so young.
Desperate for purpose, and to fulfil a noblesse oblige that extended not only to her wealth, but her connection to the force, Jessica struck out of her own accord to seek out the Jedi as Avalon Daughtner, one of her many middle names for a new identity in the Jedi.
This process of building an identity outside her upbringing was not easy. Avalon was initially found to be brash, somewhat rude, stubborn, and all in all unjedi-like in her expectations of progress to the power she already possessed. She was eventually taken on by Knight Darius Gearbolt, known for his reckless pursuits of danger and unorthodox methods. The two made a fine pairing, if a controversial one.
Across many an adventure Avalon was trained in the ways of the force and the blade beyond anything she had done before, including forging a second saber with a newly attuned crystal from Ilum. During their training, however, her master abandoned the order after a moment of crisis, and Avalon was left adrift for six months in which she was tutored by Knights Trajan Furnia, and Selina Attal. It was only when as part of a team, Avalon helped track down her former master Darius, that she was able to resume her training with him and bring him back to the order.
It was clear, however, that such an individual was unsuited to train a young noble who had become by now somewhat volatile in her emotional distress of abandonment, and limbo. Knight Selina Attal, soon to be Master, presided over the remainder of her training in the skills of the Jedi. Avalon passed her trials of insight, spirit, and skill in a series of expeditions into force tainted landscapes where she faced inner demons, and wrestled with the meaning of being both noble born, and a Jedi.
Early in her padawanship, Avalon personally saw to a diplomatic aid expedition to the Lunaris enclave. Half way through her trials as it became apparent she would need a specialisation, Avalon spent over a year alone, out in the galaxy acting as a Jedi diplomat on various small postings that gradually grew into a larger permanent station on Onderon, overseeing troubles in the monarchy and exerting Jedi influence over the proceedings to ensure fair laws and the liberty of the civilian populace. To face down in frequent argument on the palace floor, diplomats, kings aids, and the monarch himself, earned Avalon her trial of courage, and promotion to knighthood.
Though much earlier, Avalon’s trial of flesh came on an expedition with Knight Gearbolt in which a generator accident left a significant burn scar down the left side of her body from cheek to hip. Initially this injury caused great issue in a woman who so prided herself on her good looks. Though it could have been healed and grafted over, Avalon decided instead to keep the scar, and wear it as a permanent feature of her service.
At last promoted to Knight, she now seeks her next station as a permanent diplomat, serving the interests of a Jedi enclave with third parties, and any whom may have business with the Jedi. Perhaps one day the young Jedi would train her own student. Only time would tell…
